URGENT: How You Can Help in Haiti
January 13th, 2010 | Published in Call to Action | 5 Comments
Haiti is in trouble. Death tolls have topped 100,000 and hundreds of thousands more are feared dead in one of the worst earthquakes the island has ever known. Did you read that? Hundreds of thousands. Over 2 million people live in the metropolitan area where this hit.
From the New York Times:
I can’t look at this woman’s face and not feel like I need to help. This is serious.
We’ve got to help them. The first thing we can do is give money.
The easiest way to do it is send a text message. Text Yele to 501501 to send $5 to an emargency fund set up by Wyclef Jean for immediate relief. Text HAITI to 90999 to send $10 directly to the Red Cross for aid.
If you can afford to give more, please go to the American Red Cross website and give whatever you can.
Or, go to UNICEF and help children fighting to survive right now.
The Huffington Post Impact has created a page listing the organizations on the ground helping to save people right now.
ABC News also has a list of organizations helping on the ground.
I want to help. I want to go to Haiti and help people on the ground. The hospitals in Port-au-Prince have been either abandoned or destroyed. There are no social services. Absent giving money, I don’t know what I can do. I called Operation USA which is based in Los Angeles but they don’t have a place for volunteers right now. They are looking for corporate donors of bulk items to give away. This is frustrating. But there are people on the ground doing good work.
Here’s a video from a man working with Oxfam Great Britain:
If this happened in the first world, it would be absolutely devestating. But this is happening in a country already in abject poverty, with few social services, and terrible infrastructure. I’ll repeat what I wrote before: THE HOSPITALS ARE ABANDONED OR DESTROYED. Aid and relief organizations are the only entities that are keeping people alive.

And please, Give what you can.
